London is the capital and largest city of the United Kingdom. London is evaluated to be one of the world's most important global cities. London expends a significant influence upon the arts, finance, entertainment, fashion, tourism, and transportation. Also, London has various range of people and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken in the city. Lastly, London has traditional landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, and the British Museum. Double-Decker Bus Double-decker buses are in common use throughout the United Kingdom, and have been favored by many drivers because of the shorter length of double-deckers and a larger amount of seating capacity; they also are safer to drive through the narrow and tight roads common in London. Especially, the red double-decker buses which had been a main of the public transport system in London for nearly half a century following its initiation in 1956 have become a national symbol of England. Transport for London has continued to maintain these vintage buses in operation on heritage route 15H. The British Museum The British Museum, in London, is a public institution concentrated to human history, art and culture. Its permanent collection is the largest in existence, having been widely collected during the era of the British Empire. It records the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present. The British Museum was established in 1753, and its expansion over the following 250 years has resulted in the creation of several branch institutions. Since then, it has been represented as one of the leading museums in the UK to the current day. Afternoon Tea Afternoon tea is a light meal typically eaten between 3:30 pm and 5 pm. The custom originated from the wealthy social classes in England in the 1840s. By the end of the 19 century, afternoon tea was developed to its current form. For the more privileged, afternoon tea was accompanied by bread and butter, sandwiches and usually cakes and pastries. Nowadays, formal afternoon tea is more of a special occasion, taken as a treat in a hotel. The food is often served on a tiered stand; there may be no sandwiches, but bread or scones with butter and jam, or toast, muffins or crumpets. Premier League The Premier League is the top level of the English football league system. The competition was founded as the FA Premier League on 20 February 1992. The Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world and became the most profitable soccer league. In the 2005-06 seasons, the revenue of the entire Premier League club was 1.4 billion pounds. Forty-nine clubs have competed since 1992 and six of them have won the title: Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, and Leicester City. Recently, the Premier League produced Korean football stars such as Ji-Sung Park and Sung-Yong Ki, and nowadays Heung-Min Son shows his outstanding play in Tottenham Hotspur. |
