Welcome to New York, the capital of American culture and economy! From the food, to the fashion, to the iconic yellow cabs and subway, in a city as vibrant as this, it can be difficult to see and experience everything. Below are a few of the most important buildings, monuments, and experiences that capture the essence of New York.

 

Yankees Win Song

The Yankees are a baseball team that plays in New York. They are considered one of the most successful sports teams in the United States and have won 27 World Series. Notable athletes that have played for the New York Yankees include Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter. When at home in the Yankee Stadium, it is a tradition to play ¡®New York, New York¡¯ by Frank Sinatra.

 

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of hope and an icon of New York City. To many American people, it represents freedom and national pride. It has also been referenced in many poems, books, and pop culture. ¡®The New Colossus¡¯ by Emma Lazarus is a famous poem that talks about The Statue of Liberty. First unveiled in 1886, it was a gift from France to the United States and was made using copper. Over time, the statue has become the shade of green it is known for today.

 

UN Headquarters

The main United Nations headquarters is situated in New York, along the East River. This building, which was completed in 1952, is the main part of the UN. These include the General Assembly and the Security Council, where decisions on peacekeeping and political disputes are made. In addition to this, many countries have donated pieces of art and other cultural items to be put on display. Ban Ki Moon, a South Korean politician, served as the eighth Secretary-General of the UN between 2007 and 2016.


One World Trade Center

September 11, 2001 was a dark day for America. Terrorist attacks killed 2977 people and destroyed the Twin Towers in New York. The 9/11 Memorial was built where these attacks took place to remember the victims. It opened on the day after the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Two square pools are filled using waterfalls and the names of the victims are inscribed on the edge of the pools.


Central Park

In the middle of New York, Central Park offers its visitors an escape from all the hustle and bustle. Covering an area of 8 square kilometers, Central Park is populated with over 20,000 trees, ponds, and pathways. In addition to this, there are many attractions that can be visited. These include the Central Park Zoo and the Wollman Rink, which lets people living in New York enjoy the outdoors and ice skating throughout the year.
